Meet the Directors
W. Brian Scherff, Jr. is a native of San Antonio, TX and is a 2001 graduate of William Howard Taft High School. While at Taft High School, Mr. Scherff was a drum major, member of the jazz band, and outside of School played with groups on the Riverwalk like Henry Brun and the Latin Jazz Players and The Jim Cullum Jazz Band. In 2006, Mr. Scherff received a Bachelor of Music degree graduating Cum Laude from East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, TX. Recently, Mr. Scherff completed his studies for a Masters in Music Education at Texas Tech University in August of 2019.
Mr. Scherff began his career as the assistant band director and sole orchestra director of Weslaco East High School in Weslaco, TX. He then returned to his alma mater of Taft High School in San Antonio, TX as the associate director of bands and jazz band director, then was asked to succeed his middle school teacher as director of bands at Zachry Middle School. When Mrs. Scherff was offered the opportunity to pursue doctoral studies in art history at Texas Tech University, Mr. Scherff was offered an orchestra position at Coronado High School, and then the director of bands position at Mackenzie Middle School. Mr. Scherff became the Head Band Director of Irons Middle School in 2019.
Mr. Scherff is the proud father of William and Zoë, and the husband of Dr. Katharine Scherff, a professor of art history at Texas Tech University. His free time is spent playing blocks and Barbies with his kids and his favorite shows are all on PBS kids, because that’s the only TV he’s allowed to watch. He is also an active performer playing baritone saxophone for the Frontier Big Band and a saxophonist and percussionist in the Lubbock Civic Orchestra. Brian Scherff

Rhonda Morgan

Rhonda Morgan graduated from the University of North Texas with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education in 2008. She also earned her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University in 2014. Her primary instrument is Oboe.

Mrs. Morgan started her teaching career in a small town north of Houston, Livingston Tx. There she became the head band director of the Junior High School. She was able to work with her staff and community to build a strong band program. In 2015, Mrs. Morgan moved to Corpus Christi, Tx. to open a new middle school there. She was the sole band director for this campus and lead the students to become great musicians and people.
In 2019, Mrs. Morgan moved with her family to Lubbock. It is at this time she started to work for Cavazos Middle School. She survived the year of COVID, the year of Post-COVID and maternity leave with her Cavazos Family. Mrs. Morgan is excited to join the Irons Band staff this year. She believes all students can learn and make good music.

Mrs. Morgan is married to her husband of six years. Mr. Morgan is retired from the United States Air Force after 15 years of service. They recently welcomed their son, Major, in July 2021. Mrs. Morgan enjoys watching Big Brother, Marvel Movies and playing with her two dogs, Coda and Gunner.
